"The new St. Prophet Elijah Cathedral was built at the expense of the people of Dubno. The superior of church Fr. Korniiovych began the construction of the new stone church on June 29, 1902. He had made a half of construction, whereas Fr. Eugene continued and completed it.
Construction works were completed in 1908. On September 23 of the same year, St. Prophet Elijah Church was consecrated by Archbishop Anthony of Volhyn (Volhynia) and Zhytomyr. According to the order of St. Synod (decree dated August 31, 1909), St. Prophet Elijah Church was renamed and became the Cathedral. Later, a carved iconostasis in honour of Prince Volodymyr was installed here.
The architectural style of the current church fits perfectly into the canonical framework of the neo-Russian style. A five-storey, pentagonal brick building with an adjoining bell tower from the north, built in the Russian-Byzantine style. There are several entrances to the church: from the north, east and west. The main entrance is from the north, i.e. from the main street of the city. This design led to its somewhat unusual orientation, uncharacteristic of Orthodox churches.
St. Prophet Elijah Cathedral for 100 years of its existence has witnessed many historical events.
Thus, shortly after the consecration of the new church and obtaining the status of a cathedral, the First World War began. In 1914, Austrian troops captured part of Dubno. After the city returned to Russian control, some of the icons were found in piles of garbage, some were chopped and cut. Many valuable images have disappeared. It is still unknown where is the precious Blessed Icon of the Mother of God in pearls, which was located here at that time. It is worth mentioning that this icon was presented by Prince K. Ostrogski first to the Dubno Savior, then to the Holy Cross Monastery, and later to the St. Prophet Elijah Cathedral. Many church values, including bells simply disappeared.
It is an architectural monument.
